My roots and formative years in the farming and quarrying landscape of Llanfairfechan in North Wales continues to resound its influence on my work today. The undoubted support and encouragement of my Parents enabled me to follow an Art College training in the mid 60's. The training was diverse and 'of the time' but I have always felt it did not sufficiently meet my needs as a landscape painter. During the intervening years of a long and varied teaching career my desire to paint large canvasses has been 'on hold'. However, recognition and progress has been made in recent times through world-wide sales of calendars of my work, original watercolour paintings and prints. Clients remark that the images always evoke a feeling of 'Hiraeth' - that sense of longing for homeland. I have lived for the last twenty six years on the flanks of the Berwyn range of Welsh hills but feel drawn continuously to the place which has enthralled, inspired and challenged me throughout my life as an artist and image maker. The proximity of the mountain ranges to the sea results in a huge variety of available scenery. I am fortunate that within Snowdonia and Anglesey are all the ingredients that interest and motivate me to paint. Although, of course, other horizons also beckon. I will never tire of its outstanding beauty and ever-changing moods, wild moorlands, wide valleys, slate-fences, ancient stone walls and dwellings. In many ways my work is 'traditional' and like many before me I endeavour to portray a 'special sense of place' beyond mere representation of the view. I will, no doubt, continue in this vein, but through the medium of oil paint I am on the threshold of a bolder and more experimental style.
